Fleckney, Mowsley, Laughton, Gumley, Saddington
Leader: Phil Williams
Sunday’s walk is a revisit of the Laughton walk. It is a lovely and popular walk with great views. The full walk is a smidgen over 9 miles with hills and stiles.
Starting from Fleckney village car park (///loses.always.huts) at 9:30am, we make our way over to Mowsley via part of the Leicestershire Round to Saddington. If 9 miles seems a bit long, you have the option of starting and finishing at Saddington – you just need to get there and wait for the rest of us by the stile at the junction of Kibworth Road, Shearsby Road, and Wier Road (///busy.browsers.ruled).
One of the stiles along the route to Mowsley is broken so care must be taken at this point. Most of the other stiles are fine. We leave Mowsley and head uphill to Laughton, always a nice spot to rest up for a while. On our last visit we watched swallows and/or swifts darting about – they were far too fast for close examination even though they came within inches of us.
We leave Laughton and take the footpath to Gumley where you can call in to the “library” if you want to swap a book or two. We will be making use of The Bell as you deserve some refreshment after the uphill climb to Gumley!
After Gumley it’s the scenic route via Smeeton Gorse to Saddington and the main pub stop. Those of you starting from Saddington should check with The Queens Head as to whether you can make use of their car park. Normally, this is ok but it’s wise to make sure.
The final leg is then, of course, back to Fleckney.
Further down this email, after the General Information section, is an RSVP button. Please make use of this button to let me know whether you intend to come on the walk and if you will be starting from Fleckney or Saddington.
General information:
The Fleckney Walking Club meet every other Sunday for a walk of about 7 to 9 miles with a pub stop somewhere along the route.
We leave the village car park at 9:30 a.m. (///loses.always.huts).
For these walks you are advised to wear good quality walking boots and carry weatherproof clothing.
We suggest you also bring refreshments as a coffee stop is also usually on the cards.
For those who are car-sharing to walks outside of Fleckney, passengers are requested to subsidise their driver by the amount of 20p per mile (one way). For example, if the start of the walk was 10 miles from Fleckney the fee would be 10 x 20p = £2.
If you fancy leading a walk, there are plenty of ideas for walks here.
During the summer months we also have Thursday evening walks of about 4 to 5 miles in length.
These generally start and end at a pub!
We meet at the village car park, by 7 p.m. (///loses.always.huts).
In the event of a walk being cancelled due to inclement weather (or any other reason) the walk leader will communicate the cancellation by email in the first instance and also be at the start meeting point to advise any members who miss the email.
The annual cost to join the Fleckney Walking Club is £10 (Sundays and Thursdays) or £5 (Thursdays only) payable on your first walk.
You can find The Fleckney Walking Club Group on Facebook. This is a private group but you are welcome to apply to join us.
