Welford Canal Loop

Leaders: John & Denise Plews

As usual, we will meet at the village car park (///loses.always.huts) by 9.30 a.m.

The walk starts at the public car park next to the Wharf Inn in Welford (///slows.somewhere.provider) (note: Welford Road A5199 may be closed between Bruntingthorpe crossroads and Pincet Lane).

Walk north along the A5199 for approx 300m (footpath available) and turn right onto Sulby Road for approximately ½ mile. Take the footpath to the right between a gap in the woods.

After a short while, we turn right onto the Jurassic Way and reach the causeway between Sulby and Welford reservoirs.

The next section of the walk takes us over the A5199 and through the village of Welford. Look out for the postman and the blue plaque on the side of a cottage. It was in the village that a Silver Cup was uncovered (now in the British Museum) and, during excavations for a new housing estate in 2016, an Iron Age Roundhouse was discovered. We walk past St. Mary the Virgin and a short while down Hall Lane. Then it’s off over the fields, past the sheep, over a small footbridge, over the middle of a ploughed field and follow the hedgerow to the Leicester Branch of the Grand Union Canal. We will find a spot here to have a break for a nibble and a drink.

After crossing the canal, we follow it to the junction with the Welford Spur, built in 1813, linking the Grand Union with the two reservoirs of Sulby and Welford. The spur was also used to transport locally processed limestone to the Grand Union. Turning right onto the spur, we follow it for approximately 1.6 miles to Welford’s two grand marinas and to the finish at the Wharf Inn for a well-deserved pint or two.

The walk is under 7.5 miles and is mostly flat.

Away Breaks for 2024

2nd to 4th September - Sherwood Forest (Helen Morrison)
Note date and location has been changed.

General information:

The Fleckney Walking Club meet every other Sunday for a walk of about 6 to 9 miles with a pub stop somewhere along the route.
What3Words is used to pinpoint start and other relevant locations for the walks.
We leave Fleckney village car park at 9:30 a.m. (///loses.always.huts).
For these walks you are advised to wear good quality walking boots and carry weatherproof clothing.
We suggest you also bring refreshments as a coffee stop and/or a picnic stop is also usually on the cards.
For those who are car sharing to walks outside of Fleckney, passengers are requested to subsidise their driver by the amount of 20p per mile (one way). For example, if the start of the walk was 10 miles from Fleckney the fee would be 10 x 20p = £2.

If you fancy leading a walk, there are plenty of ideas for walks here.

During the summer months we also have Thursday evening walks of about 4 to 5 miles in length.
These generally start and end at a not-too-distant village pub!
We meet at the village car park, by 7 p.m. (///loses.always.huts).

In the event of a walk being cancelled due to inclement weather (or any other reason) the walk leader will communicate the cancellation to club members by email and be at the start meeting point to advise anyone who turned up regardless.

The annual cost to join the Fleckney Walking Club is £10 (Sundays and Thursdays) or £5 (Thursdays only) payable on your first walk.

You can find The Fleckney Walking Club Group on Facebook. This is a private group but you are welcome to apply to join us.
