Welham, Stonton Wyville, and Glooston Village Hall

by John

What a day. Some of us yomped from Welham, some of us strolled to Wistow.

Thanks to John for another 11.2-mile epic, and to Rita for inspiring a more gentle walk. Thanks also to Dave Stanley, who effectively named the Yompers and the Strollers.

The Strollers, but they obviously achieved their objective and enjoyed a flatter walk and a coffee at Wistow.

After rescuing a stuck pheasant that would probably have died if we hadn’t gone off piste, the Yompers reached Glooston, where we tend to “borrow” the outdoor seating behind the village hall whenever we pass through the village, as it is an excellent, quiet spot to sit and eat your lunch.

Today, preparations were being made for a Summer Barbecue Party featuring live music by Steep, and we were made very welcome. Not only were we offered a glass of ale (who would turn that down?), but we were asked if it would be a good idea for the village hall toilets to be made available for passing walkers.

Please note that the toilets at Glooston Village Hall will now be available during the day for anyone passing through.

Every Friday at 6:30 p.m., the Glooston Village Hall’s “Woodman’s Bar” is open, and all the profits made from the drinks and events are ploughed back in. So, if you fancy a “Piggin’ IPA” or whatever brew is available on the night, get yourself over to Glooston.

Once we were fed and ‘watered’, we continued our journey and met up with a “Detectorist”. If you watched the TV series, you’ll be pleased to know it was a pretty accurate portrayal.

When we finally reached the Old Red Lion in Welham, I noticed a sum of money had been dropped on the floor. I picked it up and asked the people standing at the bar whether they had lost anything, but they said they had not. I even showed them the money. I then handed the money to the barmaid and told her where I’d found it.

John went round the pub, but none of the other customers claimed to have lost it either.

It turned out, after the CCTV footage had been examined, that the money belonged to the first person I asked! He very kindly gave me £20 as a “thank you”. I got another round in! 🍺
