2025 Waterway Festival
Foxton and Market Harborough
Saturday 7th June and Sunday 8th June

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the 1950
IWA Festival of Boats and Arts held in Market Harborough
To be based at Foxton with a cavalcade to
Market Harborough on the Saturday
Featuring historic and private boats,
floating traders, land based stalls,
food, ice cream, music and much more…

Ahoy, walkers! Fancy something a little different?

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the 1950 IWA Festival of Boats and Arts, we’re taking a walk with a watery twist! This year’s event is based at Foxton, with a cavalcade of historic and private boats making their way up the canal from Market Harborough on Saturday — and we’re going to catch them in action!

Here’s the plan:
We’ll hop aboard the LC4 bus from Fleckney at 9:25am opposite Batchelor Road to Market Harborough, have a good nosey around the wharf (floating traders! food! music! ice cream!), and then stroll the easygoing 6-mile towpath to Foxton. No hills, no stiles, just a scenic canal-side wander with boats chugging past. Bliss.

Once at Foxton, we’ll soak up the festival vibes and refuel at one of the local hostelries — pint optional, but highly recommended.

And the way back?
Well, we’re keeping that flexible. Choose your own adventure:
🚌 Jump on the LC4 again
🚶 Towpath it home for a peaceful amble
🥾 Or go full explorer mode via Gumley and Saddington

The return route will be a group decision on the day, based on legs, weather, and thirst levels.

Whether you’re here for the history, the towpath, or just the chance to see a boat called “The Slippery Otter,” this is one not to miss.

Come along, bring your best walking shoes, and let’s make it a canal-tastic day out!

Thursday Evening Walk

Ditch the Sofa—Join Us for an Evening Stroll!

1st May to 31st July:

Summer’s here, and that means it’s time to swap your slippers for walking boots! The Fleckney Walking Club’s Thursday evening walks are a perfect way to stretch your legs, enjoy the fresh air, and pretend you’re training for an epic expedition (when really, it’s just 4 to 5 miles).

🚶‍♂️ Meet us at the village car park, High Street, Fleckney, by 7 p.m. (///loses.always.huts).

But wait, there’s more!

If you fancy a proper walk (and a well-earned pint), join us every other Sunday for a 7 to 9-mile adventure. There’s always a pub stop—because hydration is important.

We set off at 9:30 a.m. from the same car park.

For these longer jaunts, decent walking boots are a must (flip-flops are a definite no), and a waterproof jacket might save you from looking like a drowned rat if the weather turns. We also suggest bringing snacks—because let’s be honest, everything’s better with a coffee break.

So, come along, stretch your legs, have a laugh, and discover just how nice a walk can be when it ends with a drink! 🍻

The annual cost to join the Fleckney Walking Club is £10 for the Sunday Walks, or £5 to be a Social Member. Thursday Evening Walks are completely FREE.

If you would like to join this walk then please fill out the form below and press the Submit button.

Great Oxendon, Braybrooke, Arthingworth

Map of the route

A Scenic Ramble Through History and Countryside

This adventure begins with a scenic 12-mile drive to the charming village of Great Oxendon, where we’ll park near the start of our walk by the Villagr Hall on Main Street (///shears.rolled.motive). Our journey kicks off by heading north along a picturesque footpath, soon merging with the Jurassic Way—or the Midshire or Macmillan Way, depending on your preferred name. Take your pick!

After tackling a few stiles and passing the historic Waterloo Lodge, we strike northeast towards Braybrooke, a small yet fascinating village with a history stretching back to the Domesday Book. Entering the village itself, we pick up Griffin Road and pass The Swan, a delightful Everard’s pub. It’s a perfect summer spot for a drink outdoors, though, alas, we’ll be too early for a tipple! Instead, we push on southward along Griffin Road, where the pavement disappears, and we find ourselves on a peaceful country lane.

At the T-junction ahead, the next phase of our adventure reveals itself—marked by a white gate to the left. Step through (or take the cattle grid if you fancy a challenge), and it’s the Midshires Way all the way to Arthingworth, where the legendary Bull’s Head and well-earned refreshment await. To reach the pub, follow the fork left after the church, and it will soon rise into view on the right.

Recharged and refreshed, we retrace our steps to the fork and then veer left through the village along Oxendon Road. This gradually transforms from a proper road into little more than a country track, meandering through open fields. Despite its humble state, it still retains the name Oxendon Road and eventually meets the A508—though we’ll take a detour before that, turning right onto the dismantled railway track that leads us northward back to Oxendon.

As for the final stretch? That’s in Kathy’s capable hands! Whichever way we go, it won’t be long before we’re back on Main Street, ready for our journey home.

The Route at a Glance

📏 Distance: Approximately 7.5 miles
🌿 Terrain: Mostly firm underfoot, with a few stiles but minimal mud
⛰️ Elevation: A gentle climb out of Braybrooke, but otherwise quite forgiving
🍻 Pit Stops: The Bull’s Head, Arthingworth (plus The Swan, if you fancy a return visit!)

For those who prefer a shorter option, Braybrooke Road offers a direct route back to the cars—or, if you’re feeling sociable, a detour to The George on Harborough Road.

So, lace up your boots, soak in the countryside, and enjoy a walk that blends history, nature, and a well-earned pint (or two!).

General information:

The Fleckney Walking Club meet every other Sunday for a walk of about 6 to 9 miles with a pub stop somewhere along the route.
What3Words is used to pinpoint start and other relevant locations for the walks.
We leave Fleckney village car park at 9:30 a.m. (///loses.always.huts).
For these walks you are advised to wear good quality walking boots and carry weatherproof clothing.
We suggest you also bring refreshments as a coffee stop and/or a picnic stop is also usually on the cards.
For those who are car sharing to walks outside of Fleckney, passengers are requested to subsidise their driver by the amount of 20p per mile (one way). For example, if the start of the walk was 10 miles from Fleckney the fee would be 10 x 20p = £2.

If you fancy leading a walk, there are plenty of ideas for walks here.

During the summer months we also have Thursday evening walks of about 4 to 5 miles in length.
This year the majority of the walks will be local ones, no transport required.
We meet at the village car park, by 7 p.m. (///loses.always.huts).

In the event of a walk being cancelled for any reason (usually weather) the walk leader will communicate the cancellation to club members by email and be at the start meeting point to advise anyone who turned up regardless.

The annual cost to join the Fleckney Walking Club is £10 for the Sunday Walks, or £5 to be a Social Member. Thursday Evening Walks are completely FREE.

You can find The Fleckney Walking Club Group on Facebook. This is a private group but you are welcome to apply to join us.
