Leicester on the 44A by Phil

Canal Capers!

We’ve got the 1st of September wide open for a TuesDay walk – though, as you know, I can always wield my mighty scheduling powers and reshuffle one of John’s outings if needed.

My cunning plan? Hop on the bus to Leicester, sniff out the canal, and stroll back at least as far as Kilby Bridge. It’s high time we paid them a visit for a spot of sustenance – purely for research purposes, of course.

The 44A leaves Manor Road at 09:45, landing us at Haymarket around 10:50. Or, if you’re feeling flush, splash out on the earlier 08:45 bus and arrive at 09:50. We’ll rendezvous with anyone arriving by other means at Haymarket Bus Station.

Including the short trek from the bus station, the walk to Kilby Bridge clocks in at just over 9½ miles – let’s round it up to a neat 10 and call it a four‑to‑five‑hour adventure. If we take the later (and free!) bus, we’ll be clinking glasses at Kilby Bridge around 4 pm.

Return buses from Kilby Bridge are at 17:50, 19:02, and 19:55, getting us back to Fleckney at 18:06, 19:15, and 20:08 respectively.

Of course, the heroic option remains: walk the remaining 6½ miles home. Think of the bragging rights!

So, who’s up for stretching their legs, soaking up a bit of canal history, and earning that pint the honest way? The ducks will be watching – don’t let them think we’re all talk and no walk!
