Croft map

by Kathy

As usual, we will meet at Fleckney village car park (///loses.always.huts) by 9.30 a.m.

We will park up near The Heathcote Arms in Croft, somewhere along Hill Street (///fancied.easels.croutons). Kathy will then lead us along Huncote Road until we hang a right to go past St. Michael and All Angels Church to pick a footpath leading around part of Croft Quarry. The path runs parallel with the road for a while before heading up Croft Hill and back down to a stile near to Croft Hill Road. The path continues adjacent to the road for a while and exits onto the road via a gate.

Cross the road and take the footpath heading westwards over Thurlaston Brook to Sandpit Farm. Turn left onto Thurlaston Road and almost immediately right at Stony Bridge to pick up another footpath heading southish. This footpath exits onto Pingle Lane shortly after passing Potters Marston Hall.

Turn left onto Pingle Lane and then right at the junction of Stanton Lane and Huncote Road. Take the latter and where it bears sharply to the left, take the track directly opposite. Immediately go through the gate on the left and follow this path south through Stoney Stanton passing another quarry and a cemetery on the way.

Cross New Road and join a footpath leading to Stoney Cove. Turn sharp left onto Sapcote Road and leave the road on the right that takes you to Stoney Cove itself and, more importantly, Nemo’s Bar and Restaurant. This is, unsurprisingly, the Pub Stop, and a very nice one too!

Once suitably refreshed, we continue away from Nemo’s and take the path past Walker’s House Farm. This path leads to Broughton Road. A left along the road is followed by a right onto a bridleway. This track leads over the River Soar at Sopers Bridge before entering Croft at Broughton Road. A left onto this road over the railway bridge and along Station Road and we are back at the cars.

The walk is a smidgen over 7 miles with some undulation and a few stiles.

A Local Walk

by

  Rita Pearce

As usual, we will meet at the village car park (///loses.always.huts) by 9.30 a.m.

From the car park, the plan is to walk over to Main Street, turn right onto Wolsey Lane, and along the jitty to Kilby Road. Cross the road and head to Bachelor Road. Cross this road and wander past the school onto Coleman Road and then on to Garner Way.

Now there are a few fields to pass over until the crosspath where Kilby is straight on, but Wistow is off to the right. This path can be muddy in places if there has been any recent rainfall. At the end of the path take extra care crossing Leicester Road and head for the Wistow car park.

The walk continues over Kibworth Road and on to Newton Harcourt where we can “admire” the eco-house and the little church of St. Luke. Over the bridge and on to the towpath. Rita will let you know the way to head once on the path!

If you’ve brought some duck food with you, you will have ample opportunity to feed the ducks and swans as we walk all the way back to Fleckney via the towpath. We leave the towpath via the gate just before Fleckney Bridge (No. 73). Then it’s over the couple of ridge and furrow fields and up to The Golden Shield by whatever route you fancy.

Very slight undulation and one stile on this 6.5 mile local walk.

General information:

The Fleckney Walking Club meet every other Sunday for a walk of about 6 to 9 miles with a pub stop somewhere along the route.
What3Words is used to pinpoint start and other relevant locations for the walks.
We leave Fleckney village car park at 9:30 a.m. (///loses.always.huts).
For these walks you are advised to wear good quality walking boots and carry weatherproof clothing.
We suggest you also bring refreshments as a coffee stop and/or a picnic stop is also usually on the cards.
For those who are car sharing to walks outside of Fleckney, passengers are requested to subsidise their driver by the amount of 20p per mile (one way). For example, if the start of the walk was 10 miles from Fleckney the fee would be 10 x 20p = £2.

If you fancy leading a walk, there are plenty of ideas for walks here.

During the summer months we also have Thursday evening walks of about 4 to 5 miles in length.
These generally start and end at a not-too-distant village pub!
We meet at the village car park, by 7 p.m. (///loses.always.huts).

In the event of a walk being cancelled due to inclement weather (or any other reason) the walk leader will communicate the cancellation to club members by email and be at the start meeting point to advise anyone who turned up regardless.

The annual cost to join the Fleckney Walking Club is £10 (Sundays and Thursdays) or £5 (Thursdays only) payable on your first walk.

You can find The Fleckney Walking Club Group on Facebook. This is a private group but you are welcome to apply to join us.

Away Break 9th to 11th September

Exciting news! Our weekend away has transformed into a fabulous midweek escape! Mark your calendars for the 9th, 10th and 11th of September, as we’ve lined up an amazing array of walks and adventures just for you.

This is the site we are going to in September. Lurcher Farm, Mansfield Road, Farnsfield, NG22 8HY (///tingled.neatly.variation). Tel: 0797 060 1397

In a delightful twist, the original destination planned by Tony will now be our May retreat. But fear not, because the upcoming trip promises just as much fun and discovery!

On Tuesday, 10th September, we’re hosting our highlight event, originally the “Saturday” walk, which will be perfect for those looking to join us just for the day. This is the walk you won’t want to miss!

We’ll kick off our adventure on Monday with a delightful trip to Clumber Park, where we’ll spend the day exploring its picturesque grounds. Then, on Wednesday, we’ll venture into the legendary Sherwood Forest, following the trail to the iconic Major Oak.

While these walks might not take us through the usual fields and stiles, they promise to be every bit as enjoyable. Get ready for an unforgettable experience filled with nature, camaraderie, and plenty of fresh air!

The campsite is reasonably priced, clean, and tidy. Showers cost 20p per minute. Payment in cash is preferred upon arrival. Parking for an extra vehicle costs £1.00 per day. Evening meals will be at the Plough (///airbag.sues.outdoor) or White Post (///sailed.laughs.flagged).
