The Walk
Walk Leader: Phil Williams
This walk is just over 8 miles long and includes a nice little watering hole!
Parking is not brilliant in Teeton but if you follow the A5199 into Creaton and then head along Teeton Lane, and then along Fiveways, you will come to a five-way junction. There is plenty of room to park on a grass triangle or by the side of the road.
Set off northwest, following the road sign to Hollowell and Guilsborough. This is part of the Macmillan Way. After just under half a mile, ahead of a clump of trees, take the footpath on the right. This footpath is more of the Macmillan way and leads all the way to Creaton.
Turn left when you get to Welford Road (A5199) and continue along the path by the side of the road until you reach the junction with Hollowell Road. Carefully cross the road at this point and take the footpath on the right just after the roadsigns.
Pound the tarmac for about 700 yards until arriving at a gap in the hedge on the left and a gateway a little to the right of it. The walk goes through the gateway but, if you’re crafty, go through the gap and head over to the right and slide through the side of a forestry gate onto The Green Lane (Track). This avoids walking through a quagmire of mud! Turn left and head along the track for about 600 yards then take the footpath to the left and head southwest back to Welford Road. Cross the road and continue along the path until you join Creaton Road just before the village of Hollowell. As you enter Hollowell you will come to the thatched Village Millenium Clock that also sports a weather vane and, more importantly, seating for a well-earned coffee break!
The road forks here and you need to take the right fork, Guilsborough Road. Follow this road through the village until you reach the point where the raised pavement ends. The observant of you will notice a footpath sign pointing left on the right-hand side of the road! The actual footpath is up a couple of steps that may, or may not be, visible! This section of the walk is short, but steep. With luck, the view from the top will be well worth it!
Heading downhill, the path brings you out onto a crossroads, via a stile. The road running from left to right is Teeton Road, but you need to take the bridleway opposite from where you came out. This lane can be a bit muddy in places. It continues downhill until it meets Coton Road but just before the junction there is a car park giving a lovely view of the reservoir – and an excuse for a short break! Turn left onto Coton Road and head over the causeway across Ravensthorpe Reservoir. Continue along this road into Ravensthorpe, turn left into Church Hill, and then right into Chequers Lane. The camouflaged pub is right in front of you.
Once suitably refreshed, head out of Ravensthorpe along Teeton Road and pound the tarmac all the way (1.5 miles) back to Teeton – passing the waterworks on your left and Teeton Lodge on your right.
