Adventures 2024

Saddington, Mowsley, Laughton, Gumley Leader: John Broadhead 10th November 2024 As usual, we met at Fleckney village car park (///loses.always.huts) by 9.30 a.m. for this local walk. We embarked on

South Croxton and Lowesby by Janet Long Sunday, 27th October, 2024 This walk, led by Janet Long, is remote and sparsely populated. The steady hum of traffic is absent, and

Sharnford, Sapcote, Aston Flamville by Kathy Sunday, 13th October, 2024. We parked up at Fosse Meadows Car Park No. 2 (///delighted.spine.gliding) and, after shaking off numerous four-legged furry things, headed

15th September 2024: Keeping it local, this is a stitching together of sections of previous local walks. Challenging in parts, but mainly easy-going. There is a 7 mile option and a 9.5 mile option. Also, there is a choice of one or two pub stops!

Welford Reservoir

1st September 2024: John & Denise led the walk starting at the public car park next to the Wharf Inn in Welford. We walked north along the A5199 for approximately 300 meters (footpath available) and turned right onto Sulby Road for about ½ mile.

23rd June 2024: The walk begins at the car park for the Three Crowns Inn. Cross the High Street and walk up Church Street past the Roundhouse. The Roundhouse is actually octagonal and was previously used as the village lock-up (a small gaol) as well as for funeral bier storage. The single-storey building behind it was once the village smithy.

Arnesby Windmill

12th May 2024: John Broadhead led us from Fleckney car park, along Main Street, up to the point where the road name becomes Arnesby Road - at the house named Hounds End.

9th June 2024: John and Denise took the lead on this walk and they led us from the cricket ground on Main Street, Gumley, down the road and through the gate into the church wood. We turned left out of the wood and followed The Leicestershire Round over Smeeton Hill and down to the canal feeder.

2nd June 2024: Phil and Martin reconnoitred the route for this walk. Phil's plan was to head along the canal and through fields to Smeeton Westerby. The best place to join the canal seemed to be at Cranes Lock. This meant a walk through the village up to Leicester Road and then over a couple of fields, across Kibworth Road and over two more fields to reach the canal.

Anita at the gate!

5th May 2024: Kathy’s Bluebell Walk is always a fantastic one. This year was no exception although the weather pushed us back a week and into Easter Sunday. With permission, we parked at the top left of The Plough car park. We then walked along the lane to Burroughs Wood, wandered through the trees among the Bluebells, and then onwards to Martinshaw Woods.

3rd March 2024: Take the Leicestershire Round from Fleckney to Saddingtont then over Smeeton Gorse – yes that big hill! Continue along the Round all the way to Gumley, then pathways to Laughton. Rest, eat, return along paths, bridleways, and road.

Narborough

4th February 2024: Walk around some of the lesser known parts of Enderby and Narborough with a pleasant walk along a disused railway. From the start point, the walk leads up to the crossing and into the Enderby Park and Ride. Well, on any other day but Sunday it would! With the Park and Ride closed for the day we had to walk around it.

21st January 2024. An easy sub-seven mile walk with no stiles starting from Countesthorpe and taking in Blaby and Glen Parva.

7th January 2024: Starting from a lay-by near Rolleston and taking in Skeffington and Billesdon, this 6.5 mile walk is mainly on hard stuff. The reason being that prior to the walk the area had been literally flooded and it was felt wise to avoid fields of mud.

General information:

The Fleckney Walking Club offers a range of walks for anyone who enjoys fresh air, good company, and the occasional debate about whose turn it is to get lost.
All walks start from Fleckney Village car park (What3Words: ///loses.always.huts).

Weekday Morning Walks

We head out every weekday at 8:30 a.m. for a 3–4 mile leg‑stretcher. These are friendly, local, and an excellent excuse to pretend we’re “morning people”.

Sunday Walks

Every Sunday we meet at 9:30 a.m.

The Sunday programme alternates each time:

  • One week: a short walk (4–5 miles) with a coffee stop
  • The next: a long walk (6–9 miles) with a pub stop

And so the cycle continues, like a well‑oiled machine… or at least a machine that’s had a coffee or a pint.

Good boots and weatherproof layers are strongly advised, especially for those who attract rainclouds. Bring refreshments too — a coffee or picnic stop is usually part of the ritual.

If we’re travelling outside Fleckney, car sharers are asked to contribute 20p per mile (one way).
Example: 10 miles = £2, plus whatever emotional support the driver requires.

Thursday Evening Walks (Summer)

In summer we also run Thursday evening walks of 4–5 miles, starting at 7 p.m. from the village car park.
If the programme creeps into September, we shuffle the start to 6:15 p.m. in a brave attempt to outrun the sunset.

Most Thursday walks this year are local, so no transport or complicated logistics — just turn up and look enthusiastic.

Leading a Walk

If you fancy leading a walk, we have plenty of route ideas here. You bring the charm; the rest of us will bring the heckling.

Cancellations

If a walk is cancelled (usually weather, occasionally common sense), the leader will notify everyone via email and WhatsApp, and will also appear at the meeting point to console any optimists who turned up anyway.

Membership

Annual membership remains a bargain at £5, which is less than the price of a pint on most of our pub‑stop routes.
