Adventures 2019

The Golden Shield

Just over 7 miles, this local walk takes you from Fleckney to Arnesby, down to Shearsby, and back to Fleckney. Very muddy if it's been raining!

The Pug and Greyhound

5.5 miles: This walk takes you from The (Pug and) Greyhound (shame!), down to the canal and along the towpath to Newton Harcourt. From there it's across the fields back to Great Glen and The (Pug and) Greyhound (hooray!).

The Bell

8.5 miles: From Great Glen to Little Stretton, over to King's Norton (the long way!), down through Burton Overy and then back to Great Glen and The (Pug and) Greyhound.

A wee Church

8 miles: Park at, or near, The Crown Inn at Tur Langton and head north-east to Carlton Curlieu, around in a long loop to Shangton and back to The Crown - sorry, Tur Langton!

8.5 miles: The countryside and views around Hallaton are some of the best. Park at or near the Bewicke Arms and head out of Hallaton past the church. This route takes you through Slawston, Blaston, and Horninghold before doubling back to Hallaton.

7 miles: An easy walk from The Wharf at Welford across fields, along the canal towpath, over the Hemplow Hills and back to Welford and The Wharf.

9 miles: Along and through Martinshaw Wood to Ratby Burroughs, around to Botcheston, back through the Burroughs to Martinshaw Farm, and back to the start via Groby.

8.5 miles: These -by endings are generally places where the Vikings settled first. The -by has passed into English as 'by-law' meaning the local law of the town or village. This figure-of-eight walk takes you from Rearsby, through Brooksby, Rotherby, Frisby, and Hoby, before looping back through Rotherby and Brooksby to Rearsby.

7 miles: Ups and downs from East Carlton to Ashley down the map to Stoke Albany over to Wilbarston and back to East Carlton.

8 miles: From the very small village of Teeton go up the map to Creaton, around a long muddy loop avoiding Cottesbrooke, or not, down the map to Hollowell, drinky-poos at The Chequers in Ravensthorpe, and then teeter back to Teeton.

Beautiful countryside, even in the rain!

17 miles: Yes! 17 miles! Janet Long took two of us on a "short" walk from Fleckney! Along the canal past Newton Harcourt, past The Navigation, into South Wigston, through Blaby, down the map to Countesthorpe and then on to Kilby before returning home!

Bisbrooke pub.

8 miles: From Bisbooke, up and over to Seaton, along to Lyddington and then up to Uppingham and a choice of pubs. Finally, a gentle stroll back to Bisbrooke.

Brinklow Castle information board.

8 miles: From Brinklow through the castle grounds, to Hungerfield and on to Little Lawford. Change direction and head through King’s Newnham and Bretford before turnong north back to Brinklow.

4.5 miles: This Thursday walk took us clockwise from Lubenham, past Thorpe Lubenham Hall, the Judith Stone, and on to Marston Trussell and then back to Lubenham and the Coach and Horses.

4.5 miles: A lovely and easy walk from Mowsley, up the map past Valley View Farm and then down the map to Laughton and finally left across the map to the Staff of Life at Mowsley.

4.5 miles: If you like to describe walks by their shape on the map, this is a lariat, or lasso. From Houghton-on-the-Hill head past Redver's Farm, hang a right to take you past Monk's Grave and bear round anti-clockwise past Old Ingarsby towards Keyham and then south back to Redver's Farm, Houghton, and the Rose and Crown.

5 miles: Thursday walk led by the Cow Whisperer, Dave Bromley. An interesting and easy walk, even if we didn't stick to the footpaths!

4 miles: This was an easy "Let's get back into it" walk. From the car park, past the school and then anti-clockwise around Fleckney Grange, The Meadows and Lyndon Lodge Farm. We ended up in The Golden Shield - where else?!?

8.5 miles: My first "proper" walk as a leader. This walk can be made longer or shorter quite easily (it started off as a 12 miler!). From Laughton to the canal, along the tow-path for a while, then down the map to Lubenham before heading north to Foxton and then back to Laughton.

8 miles: And a bit! From Swithland Wood, passing Woodhouse on your left, to the outskirts of Quarndon and then back via Swithland Reservoir, Swithland itself (and The Griffin Inn), before heading back to the car.

8 miles: Head out of Aston Flamville along the Leicestershire Round. Follow this path under the motorway, through a teensy weensy bit of Hinckley, under the railway, to Burbage Common. After the common hang a right along Leicester Road and then another right along a footpath that takes you to the railway line once again. Continue on this path south-east to the roundabout over the motorway and continue in the same direction to Sharnford.

9.5 miles: From Launde Abbey in a large anti-clockwise loop and into Braunston-in-Rutland for refreshments in either the 18th century Old Plough or the 17th century Blue Ball.

8 miles: The Bluebell Walk, or how get mislaid in the woods! When we finally emerged from Martinshaw Woods we headed to Newtown Linford and then down to Groby skirting the quarries. The Stamford Arms was our watering hole before heading back to the (edge of the) woods.

9 miles: Down (mapwise) along the Brampton Valley Way and then sharp left along Kelmarsh Road into Arthingworth. North out of Arthingworth along various pathways and into Braybrooke and The Swan. Double back out of the pub but then head northeast to the Brampton Valley Way once more and thence back into Great Oxendon.

6.5 miles: The latin inscription "Pereunt Et Imputantur" just below the clock face of Marston Trussell's St. Nicholas Church is translated as “They perish and are reckoned”, meaning that the hours and days perish and are reckoned to our accounts. Not a lot of people know that! Drinks were at The Red Lion in Sibbertoft.

8.5 miles: The Langtons is always provide a good walk. Starting from Tur Langton head east to Stonton Wyville and then southeast towards Welham. The return trek takes in Thorpe Langton, East Langton and the Bell Inn, then Church Langton and back to Tur Langton.

6.5 miles: This walk was a circular one starting at the Market Place in Billesdon, thence towards Billesdon Coplow and back via the ancient village of Frisby.

6 miles: This walk takes in Riverside, Beeby, Lodge Farm, and a permissive track back to Barkby and The Malt Shovel. As our leader said: “Short on stiles, but not on style”.

8 miles: Starting at Chapel Brampton ,we walked towards Holdenby Hall, and came back via Harlestone and Church Brampton. The pub stop was at the end of the walk at The Spencer Arms in Chapel Brampton.

7.5 miles: This local walk is lovely - when the weather permits! From Fleckney head through Saddington, across fields to Mowsley, across more fields through Saddington Lodge Farm and then even more fields back to Fleckney.

General information:

The Fleckney Walking Club offers a range of walks for anyone who enjoys fresh air, good company, and the occasional debate about whose turn it is to get lost.
All walks start from Fleckney Village car park (What3Words: ///loses.always.huts).

Weekday Morning Walks

We head out every weekday at 8:30 a.m. for a 3–4 mile leg‑stretcher. These are friendly, local, and an excellent excuse to pretend we’re “morning people”.

Sunday Walks

Every Sunday we meet at 9:30 a.m.

The Sunday programme alternates each time:

  • One week: a short walk (4–5 miles) with a coffee stop
  • The next: a long walk (6–9 miles) with a pub stop

And so the cycle continues, like a well‑oiled machine… or at least a machine that’s had a coffee or a pint.

Good boots and weatherproof layers are strongly advised, especially for those who attract rainclouds. Bring refreshments too — a coffee or picnic stop is usually part of the ritual.

If we’re travelling outside Fleckney, car sharers are asked to contribute 20p per mile (one way).
Example: 10 miles = £2, plus whatever emotional support the driver requires.

Thursday Evening Walks (Summer)

In summer we also run Thursday evening walks of 4–5 miles, starting at 7 p.m. from the village car park.
If the programme creeps into September, we shuffle the start to 6:15 p.m. in a brave attempt to outrun the sunset.

Most Thursday walks this year are local, so no transport or complicated logistics — just turn up and look enthusiastic.

Leading a Walk

If you fancy leading a walk, we have plenty of route ideas here. You bring the charm; the rest of us will bring the heckling.

Cancellations

If a walk is cancelled (usually weather, occasionally common sense), the leader will notify everyone via email and WhatsApp, and will also appear at the meeting point to console any optimists who turned up anyway.

Membership

Annual membership remains a bargain at £5, which is less than the price of a pint on most of our pub‑stop routes.
